- Help for GIF files.
-
- GIF is Graphics Interchange Format, a format for graphic images. It was
- developed by CompuServe for two main purposes: first, it is machine
- independent (allowing users of various computers to share graphic images);
- second, it is a very compressed format (so downloading time and expense is
- less). CompuServe folks pronounce GIF so that it sounds like a kind of
- peanut-butter.
-
- Here in MACFUN we have a number of programs that can utilize GIF files. In
- no special order (and at the time of this writing):
-
- LIB5:GIFABO.TXT[74017,2573] (11/1/88) 13.6K
- This is a description of GIFConverter.
-
- LIB5:GIFCNV.SIT[74017,2573] (11/8/88) 49.3K
- GIFConverter allows viewing GIF files on any modern Mac, and saving the
- files to various common Macintosh formats. It also supports printing in
- color to the ImageWriter II or LQ and in grayscales to laser printers. This
- is a demo version.
-
- LIB5:GCPAT.SIT[74017,2573] (11/15/88) 5.2K
- This is a program to correct a bug in early versions of GIFConverter. It is
- not needed with the above file.
-
- LIB5:ABOTVU.TXT[71121,3421] (3/6/89) 5.3K
- TURBO VIEW INFO REGISTRATION FEATURES DESCRIPTION TEXT ABOUT MI CONCEPTS
- This is a description of TurboView.
-
- LIB5:TRBOVU.SIT[71121,3421] (3/6/89) 68.1K
- Turbo View is a desk accessory which allows viewing GIF and other format
- files, as well as saving them in other formats (it won't save in GIF
- format). It does not show color images (although it can work with them).
- This is a keyware version (limited use until registered).
-
- LIB14:COLOR.SIT[74326,156] (5/7/88) 82.3K
- This FKey allows capturing color screen snapshots and can save them to GIF
- format (as well as others). This is shareware.
-
- LIB14:PICPAL.BIN[73270,1150] (6/6/88) 13.4K
- This tool isn't specifically for GIF files. It adds some special resources
- to color PICT files (as created by some of the GIF programs), so that they
- will read into PixelPaint version 1 with the correct color palette (not
- needed with PixelPaint version 2).
-
- LIB14:GIF101.SIT[73270,1150] (2/10/89) 63.1K
- Giffer is a Mac II only GIF viewing and conversion utility. It uses 8-bit
- color, naturally. It is "beerware" (shareware).
-
-
- For GIF tools for other computers, please visit a forum specific for the
- computer you have in mind, or else GO PICS to reach the Graphic Support
- Forum where you can likely find what you need.
-
- Here in MACFUN, library 15 is devoted to GIF and RLE files (RLE is another
- format of graphics, but nobody uses it much).
-
- There may be special requirements for terminal programs for downloading GIF
- files. If you use FreeTerm or The CompuServe Navigator, you can download
- the files in an ordinary manner, using QuickB protocol, and they will be
- fine as they are downloaded (Navigator even shows them as you download).
- For other terminal programs you might have to change some settings. Some
- terminal programs think GIF files are text, and they try to strip out
- carriage return or line feed characters, but those characters are actually
- parts of the image. The resulting download is unusable and unsalvageable.
- It is important to make sure your telecom program is set so that it does
- not strip any characters during download.
